Highlights from a Recent Virtual Classroom

Description: A virtual classroom is a bit more than an online presentation since it invites students to engage with the speaker and be interactive.

Length: The ideal time for the presentation is about 20-25 minutes in addition to Q&A. Our virtual classrooms have gone longer in the past and we are trying to adjust during COVID by making them shorter.

Audience: Primarily Elementary students with General Ed & Special Ed students from San Andreas High School.

The Goal: To provide career and industry exposure for students who might not otherwise have access to individuals or companies such as yours. We also like covering Farm to Table Concepts or the Food Ecosystem to incorporate our applied learning in our AgTech Facility, Greenhouse, or student business enterprise.

It’s our hope that these sessions foster learning, career exploration, inspiration, and hope.

Preparation:

  • Initial interview and planning with speaker for virtual classroom (i.e. discuss if there will be slide presentation, handouts, polls, and general interactions with students)

  • Bio, Profile pic, photos and/or videos to use for introduction. Student and/teacher pre-recorded the introduction and other items

  • Had a walk-through, provided virtual classroom scripts and presentation a week before the scheduled date. This allowed the teacher to review the presentation and collaborate with the industry professional and prepare her students prior to the date.
